A permanent resident has the option to become a Canadian citizen after meeting the necessary requirements:
✅ to be present in Canada for at least 1095 days for the last 5 years.
✅ to prove English or French language proficiency
✅ have filed your taxes, if you need to
✅ pass a citizenship test
1. Know Your Eligibility
To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, you must:
Be a permanent resident in Canada.
Have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) in the five years immediately before applying.
Have filed income taxes for at least three years within the five-year period, if required under the Income Tax Act.
Demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French if you are between 18 and 54 years old.
Take and pass a test on your knowledge of Canada’s history, values, institutions, and symbols if you are between 18 and 54 years old.

3. Gather Necessary Documents
Ensure you have the following:
Permanent Residence Card
Valid passport(s) or travel document(s)
Two pieces of personal identification (e.g., driver’s license, health card)
Proof of language proficiency (if applicable)
Any other documents specified in the application package
4. Complete the Application Form
Use the appropriate application form:
Adults (18 years and older): Use form CIT 0002.
Minors (under 18 years): Use form CIT 0003.
Ensure all information is accurate and complete to avoid processing delays.
5. Pay the Application Fees
Application fees are as follows:Adults (18 years and older): CAD 630 (includes a processing fee of CAD 530 and a right of citizenship fee of CAD 100).
Minors (under 18 years): CAD 100 (processing fee only).
Pay your fees online and include the receipt with your application.
6. Submit Your Application
You can apply either online or by mail:Online: If eligible, apply through the IRCC online portal.
By Mail: Send your completed application package to the appropriate IRCC office, as specified in the application guide.
7. Prepare for the Citizenship Test and Interview
If you are between 18 and 54 years old, you will be invited to take the citizenship test. This test assesses your knowledge of Canada. Following the test, you may be required to attend an interview with a citizenship official.
8. Attend the Citizenship Ceremony
Once your application is approved, you will be invited to a citizenship ceremony, where you will take the Oath of Citizenship and officially become a Canadian citizen.
